Many wonderful memories were shared and appreciated by all present Guest: Juan Martorana from Bicycle Victoria about “Time to Ride” Time to Ride is aimed at new riders over 50 years of age and continues on from “Cycling for Health” aimed at women over 35 and run last year. The program is to encourage 200 men and women to get into cycling, who are currently relatively inactive. The areas where the program will run are Wangaratta, Ballarat, Moreland and Darebin. The program is being supported by Local council staff, BUGs. participating bike shops, Council of the Aging and Darebin’s Golden Oldies Juan mentioned the barriers to being active and riding bikes. The program aims to overcome these barriers. The launch will be on Tuesday August 2 at CERES at 10.15 am by Minister for Aged Care Gavan Jennings MLA. Invitation for DBUG members to come along to CERES with their bikes etc. The program will collect names until September when program starts, Up to 60/70 participants for pilot being sought. Mentors are being recruited for running the “getting started” sessions. Program includes the development of an activity plan for participants that includes a 3 month program of introductory rides Participants will also receive assistance with setting up bike and making sure it fits and basic bike maintenance Juan would like to hear from anyone interested in leading these. Some Darebin BUG members have already volunteered. 2. Business arising from the minutes As the last meeting was the special gathering at the Shire Hall to hear Kate Leeming there was no business arising. 3. Norm’s adventures in Gippsland and elsewhere. Norm Appleby told us about his earlier riding memories including his first bike from a bike shop in High St Preston, riding as a child and rediscovering bikes as transport as a young adult. Norm’s first venture into touring was to tackle the Great Ocean Road, making it to Portland despite a broken gear cable. Norm rode his fold-up Peugeot all over Victoria until the frame broke and he moved on to a touring bicycle from Hillman and expanded his horizons interstate. Bike Trails of East Gippsland Norm recently rode the old Peugeot from Philip Island, through Kilcunda and Wonthaggi to Traralgon, then caught the train to Walhalla and to Bairnsdale to ride the rail trail. Some is sealed, most is gravel and road and bridge crossings are sometimes a bit rough. Phone signals are patchy and Norm recommends not going alone. The Gippsland Discovery Trail runs from Bairnsdale. to Lakes Entrance. Some parts are very steep and/or gravelly. The highlight is the Mississippi Creek trail along an old tramway. Norm thanked for his presentation and sharing his experiences. 3. General Business 3.1 Campaigns - Robin Darebin Bike Strategy has been adopted by Council in June. Robin circulated a copy. There will be a steering committee to drive the strategy for 5 years and the BUG has a representative on the committee - Robin at this stage. Some concerns are the Darebin Creek trail crossing of the Darebin Rd bridge under bridge - a problem if it floods over the bridge Funding is being sought from Parks Vic for this. St Georges Rd Roundabout re funding Robin will have more news later in the year A letter received re lack of clear signs on the Darebin Creek trail to Latrobe Univ will be followed up by DBUG with Darebin Council and Parks Vic Meeting expressed its appreciation of the work Robin has done preparing our response to the Darebin Bicycle Strategy and his ongoing leadership of the Campaign Committee. 3.2 Jerseys & Socks Jo showed us the designs for the jersey and reminded that a 50% deposit will need to accompany jersey orders. To date 12 members have expressed their intention to purchase. We need to receive minimum of 25 orders. Jo outlined available sleeve types and sizes. Agreed that a $50 deposit cheque or cash to Jo Southwell by our next meeting. Socks available for $10 , a number were sold on the night. 3.3 Rides report Robin talked about the bookshops ride from Thornbury to Camberwell Looked at lots of books and bought some, cold but sunny. Will do this again next year Midweek rides – Norm A reported that numbers were down a bit. 3.4 Upcoming rides Doug indicated that the practical ride for people doing ride leaders training is being organised by Sean for Saturday Aug 13. Talk to Doug if you want to join in Eltham to Alphington on Sunday 21st August Pre-Spring Ride: Wattles and Waterways, Eltham to Alphington Graded as medium, some road riding, some trail riding, 4 - 5 hours of cycling. They are into their 5th week of training, meeting at 9am each Sunday at Jika Jika and riding 25 - 80km Most 16 doing 100km except Lee who is going all the way. Will do around the bay in 2 days - staying at Youth Hostel Changes to Ride Registration form Doug reported on changes to form recommended by the committee to improve liability issues and awareness of all participants of waiver. Also to add the BUG recommends ambulance membership and insurance. New forms will go to all ride leaders. Ride leaders need to return them to Doug or to the folder. 3.7 Report on June meeting Kate Leeming spoke about her ride through Australia. About 60 people attended. DBUG was granted the full amount requested for Community Grant from Darebin CC $3.480. Thanks expressed to Ray for again coordinating the funding request. We have also applied to Vic Health for funding for the Community Cycling Celebration. Nerolie indicated that applications open in October. 4. New business Promotion using car stickers Yannick outlined his investigations relating the printing of car stickers for D BUG. Jacques indicated that Whitehorse BUG had obtained very competetive prices for theirs.
